Gary Alan Fine is John Evans Professor of Sociology at Northwestern University. During 2010-2011 he is a John Simon Guggenheim Fellow and a fellow at the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences. He received his Ph.D. in social psychology from Harvard University in Social Psychology. His most recent books include Authors of the Storm: Meteorology and the Culture of Prediction and The Global Grapevine: Why Rumors of Terrorism, Immigration, and Trade Matter (with Bill Ellis), and he is currently writing about the culture of competitive chess.
He specializes in the sociology of culture, collective memory, the politics of reputations, rumor, social theory, and ethnographic research.
