That they failed though is no big surprise; as Colbert also has said,”Reality has a well known liberal bias.” I look forward to a more sane political atmosphere in the coming years, and the outcome of the “Fiscal Cliff” negotiations should be very telling as too whether this optimism is warranted or not.

Also during the negotiations it will also be important to keep an eye on whether “a free public life, where people with different identities and principles meet between left and right” becomes more predominate, or whether whether there is another return to the contentiousness that surrounded the “Obama Care” negotiations. Will the Tea Party take to the streets in defense of tax cuts for the rich? If indeed there has been a (perhaps forced) return to the middle for Conservatives, then my guess is the answer to that question is no.
