Making the policy argument without such direct reference to the election, a commenter at NPR similarly argues that PBS and its muppet community have been an important form of U.S. cultural diplomacy for decades, a generational exercise of soft power with excellent returns on investment, if the long view is taken—one that we ought not to shortsightedly defund. In light of what I’ve written above, I completely agree and think that this is an important point in its own right, apart from any discussion of the Romney campaign itself.

I think Aron Hsiao is onto something very important here. The
Romney Bird Moment reveals the field of the political contest, the
stakes between Romney and Obama, and for that matter, what is at stake
in broader struggles such as the ones that OWS engages. I think thatthis post is a nice companion to Blow’s op.ed. in the Times
yesterday. I will write more on this tomorrow.
