in the entire region former “dissidents” have lost their immediate political popularity (already around 1998-2000). Look at Havel – before he died the Czechs were more likely to mock him than to speak fondly of him. But that does not question their intellectual and moral authority. They might not always be cynical politicians of the sort that makes it to the parliament every four years, true. But that hardly counts as an accusation.

I wonder what you mean by a doctrinal liberal point of view. Without regard to their political standing, it seems to me that they are highlighting some very serious problems.

These people were leading politicians of the small SZDSZ, Alliance of Free Democrats, which didn’t get enough votes to go to the parlament at the last election, and therefore nowadays it doesn’t exist. They see the world from a doctrinal liberal point of view.
