I have not heard a single civilized reason not to build the community center (I am curious, Lauren, what you mean saying it’s not a good idea to build it before the area’s renewal is complete?)and am deeply worried that such villanization of the project, of Feisal Abdul Rauf and of Islam — and the attention and validation it is receiving in the mass media — is taking this country down a dangerous path. Park 51 must be built! (And not just because I personally think it would be a very interesting and valuable addition to NYC’s cultural scene.)

Rauf has been villanized by not just an uncaring public but an unknowing one. Nothing he’s done suggests any subversive intent. I may not think it’s a good idea to open such a community center before the rest of the area’s renewal is complete, but it’s certainly un-American to try to stop them.
